Philosophy

Our philosophy is based on the principles of the Reggio Approach where children are viewed as capable, competent and strong. We understand that the children come to us with a great deal of knowledge and are not empty vessels to be filled with the wisdom of adults, rather they learn about the world around them through play. Our view of the children is open-ended, where teachers facilitate learning rather than direct it and the curriculum is developed directly from the children’s ideas and curiosities. It is negotiated between the children and their teachers thus creating an environment where everyone’s thoughts and feelings are valued and respected. Our children learn about themselves, their peers and the world through investigation and exploration of the arts, drama, music and social interactions.

Passion for teaching and learning is a core tenant at Phoenix Child Care. Without passion, the learning process is without colour. Our teachers share their own personal passions with the children and in return, the children become deeply invested in the unfolding of each project. Our children also unabashedly share their own passions with their teachers and their peers. When they become excited, take risks and focus their deepest efforts on their “work” their passion shines through.

Documenting the children’s learning process is an essential component of our program. This documentation begins by recording the children’s conversations which occur not only during formal meetings but also throughout the day. Photographs which capture tiny moments in time illustrate the learning as it is happening and serves as a visual record of these important moments. When we reflect upon these words and images, the teachers gains not only an understanding of the path a project is taking, but also a glimpse into the inner world of each individual child.

It is essential that families are included in this process and experience has shown us that parents want to understand and be part of what their children are learning in our classroom. We understand and respect that parents know their children best and are the most influential people in their children’s lives. Phoenix is a place where our families and children feel a true sense of belonging. Materials are inclusive and promote respect and appreciation for the cultural diversity of the community and our families are encouraged to share their celebrations and beliefs with us.
